Hi Eva,
Ray can correct me if I am wrong, but it appears to me that the image Ray identified as problematic is very, very large. Perhaps if you were to resize it and make it smaller, and then to upload that smaller image, that would help?
April 16, 2019 at 11:16 pm #8216Matthew K GoldModeratorThanks for the link — and it’s great to find out about this installation! The site is loading quickly for me; are there particular pages where you are finding the page loads to be slow? And has this issue been going on for a while or is it something that just started happening?

A few thoughts:
1. What do you mean by “pull tweets into CBOX”? Are you thinking of something like what we have on the CUNY Academic Commons ( https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/twitter/ ), which pulls tweets from hashtags, user accounts, and lists onto a page, or are you hoping to have tweets feed into group feeds and notifications? I believe all of that is possible in different ways, but it depends on what you want.
2. You can think about allowing twitter/facebook accounts to be used to authenticate logins to the CBOX site, which might make it easier for people to get in and out of the CBOX space
3. I’m assuming you have reply-by-email activated, but if not, you should — it will allow users to reply to forum threads by clicking “reply” from their email accounts
4. Reply-by-email also allows people to create group posts through addresses that are unique to their accounts. But the addresses are a bit messy/convoluted, and can’t really be memorized since they contain long strings of randomized characters. we are working on a new thing for the CUNY Academic Commons (and I think we have released it is a CBOX plugin, though Ray can confirm) that allows people to set specific addresses for groups so that when users want to start new threads, they just have to write an email to the group address (which can be something like my-group-name@siteaddress.edu — e.g. dh@groups.commons.gc.cuny.edu ). This will make posting to groups more like posting to a listserv
But a lot of this depends on how you have set up your site and how you are using it — ie, are you using blogs and groups?
I hope that some of this is helpful!

I absolutely love that fellow CBOX users are giving each other advice!! That’s how we know there is a real community developing here. Thank you so much for being an active part of it.
Best,
Matt

You might find this plugin — written by the Commons/CBOX team — useful —
https://wordpress.org/plugins/bp-rsed/I’ve used it on several CBOX sites to good effect to restrict registration to particular domains, such as .edu and .org

January 11, 2017 at 12:10 pm #6180Matthew K GoldModeratorHi Richard,
No, CBOX is not a “dead architecture,” nor is it “junk.” Two people have replied to your message here, but the people on this forum represent a fraction of the developers who could potentially help you. Since CBOX is built on WordPress and BuddyPress, you might see if you can find a BuddyPress developer to hire for your project. Keep in mind that WordPress/BuddyPress/CBOX developers are in demand and may not be available to take on your project. You can advertise in a number of different venues, such as the ones described here — https://wpgurus.net/freelance-wordpress-developer-for-hire/ (others may have different suggestions).
When you do post job advertisements, you might have more success enticing developers to apply when you post info about hourly rates and/or budgets, and post more info about the project in question. Simply saying that you are “willing to pay” and asking developers to “give me a bid” is not likely to give you the results you are looking for. You might also avoid writing in ALL CAPS, which on the internet is akin to shouting ( https://www.lifewire.com/why-not-to-write-in-all-caps-1173242 ).
In short, I think that if you take some more care with your approach, you may have better luck finding people to work with you. Good luck.
Best,
Matt

When you go to the Dashboard and go to the Users tab, do you see a Forum role for this user? If so, what does it say?

Matt

Yes, you can use CBOX in commercial contexts. You just can’t sell the code
that powers the software, as it is protected under a GPL license.Best,
Matt
April 25, 2015 at 9:18 pm #5612Matthew K GoldModeratorHi Stephanie,
The CBOX team would love to hear about any accessibility issues. Please
post your thoughts here or email us at commons@gc.cuny.edu and we will see
what we can do to address any issues you find. As always, we also encourage
other developers to join us in improving CBOX!Best,
Matt

You might look into some BbPress plugins for additional forum functionality

Can you confirm that you are not logged in when checking those links to BP activity pages on a password-protected site?

I hope that Ray’s tips have been helpful. I just wanted to note that unfortunately, as a DIY free software project, we are unable to provide private one-on-one support. We encourage you to continue posting here as needed

Project Director, Commons In A BoxOctober 19, 2014 at 5:20 pm #5190Matthew K GoldModeratorThe CUNY Academic Commons includes many committees, but we have not (as
yet) developed project management features for CBOX. In CUNY, groups tend
to use a mix of file uploads, collaborative documents, and forum posts to
stay connected. In some groups I’m part of, we post links to google
spreadsheets that we use for task assignments/tracking.At present, further development on project management features for CBOX
groups is not something that the Commons team has on its development
roadmap, but this is a free software project and I hope that others will
consider working on it! -
