I like the Christian solution, I tested a similar one some time ago. It is useful if the “General” group is linked to the main blog and this is the only blog. It sounds like you copied the theme folder over, rather than installing it from the repository, to avoid losing all your settings?

I think if you remove all the widgets from the sitewide sidebar, you have, effectively, deactivated it.
