I’ve been having a look at how translation friendly Commons In A Box is, as one of my sites is in German and for it to be a professional job of course it all needs to be in German.

Commons In A Box and most of the recommended plugins are mostly translatable, the exceptions being the Wiki extension and the Announcements plugin, the former taking a lot of infos from the Docs plugin though, making it no big deal (but certainly annoying …).

The standard Commons In A Box theme (an awesome job by the way) from PressCrew doesn’t seem to have a .pot file or a languages directory, at least I can’t find them anywhere, but looking at the code, it looks like it is prepared for translation. Perhaps @Bowe could point me in the right direction here, or at least offer more information.

    Hi Dave,

I’ve started an issue about this for the Group Announcements and Wiki plugins here:
    https://github.com/cuny-academic-commons/bp-group-announcements/issues/1
    https://github.com/boonebgorges/buddypress-docs-wiki/issues/4

About theme localization, it looks like you’re right. I’ve also opened an issue for this here:
    https://github.com/cuny-academic-commons/cbox-theme/issues/117

Thanks for pointing this out, Dave!

I see that the issue on github as far as localisation of the theme is concerned still hasn’t been assigned, and is as such still a problem and very frustrating for those working in different languages.

Are we likely to see any progress on this, or is it something that’s not on the list and I should start looking around for another theme?

    Thanks for any feedback.

    Hi guys,

This is certainly one of our main priorities for the next major release. Sorry for the trouble!

    Stupid me !
all the little adjustments I have made are gone with the new update.

I know that it’s very difficult to translate at this time, but if someone work on it I’ll be there with you to test and investigate for make cbox theme perfectly fluent in french and other languages 🙂

@bowe I can’t seem to find available translations / localization files for CIAB and this thread seems to suggest there aren’t any. Am I looking in the wrong place? I’m specifically looking for German.

If you folks are not already using Zanata (free, open source, web-based) to gather translations, perhaps that would be where to place the project and recruit assistants?

    Edited to include link: https://translate.zanata.org/zanata/

Hi, I am planning to launch a site in french in the next days. Is there feedback if CBOX is working well with french language? Supposing I can do some translation if needed, are there other things related to localisation that I have to care about ?

For information, my theme is Responsive and it fits my needs. Do you think I should prefer the CBOX theme for better integration?

Hello, it seems that the cbox theme is not translation ready yet – am I correct ?

As I need this functionality to build a site in french, can someone hint me at how to do this ?

I usually use codestyling localization plugin to translate themes and extensions.

I guess this plugin uses the .po and .mo files that we usually find in the language folder.

While trying to use this localization plugin, I got an alert that says that the plugin doesn’t know where files to work on.

I guess those are the missing .po file.

So is there a way to automate the creation of those files by scanning the theme files code ?

Apparently, the theme php files are coded in a correct to be translatable, or is it just partial ?

    Thank you,

    Fabrice

@Fabrice – Unfortunately, I do not have an answer for you.  I did, however, want to weigh in to indicate that multi-language functionality will be a major priority for my work over the coming three months.  I will share updates as I progress with my work.  Currently, I have used the WPML plug-in paired with the BowePress plugin to build out a bi-lingual site in English and Armenian.

The limitation at this point is that the home page and the BuddyPress community pages are shared between both languages (basically they are English language pages.)  That is good enough for our needs at the moment, however, as we proceed we will be looking at approaches to address this shortcoming.

Ok thank you… We’re going to look at how to do this this week and if we find a better way than hardcoding the template, I’ll let you know… Thank you.
