There are no known issues with Commons In A Box and WP 4.0. Users should feel free to upgrade.

However, BP 2.1 is coming out next week, and there are some changes we need to review, and we will shoot for a Commons In A Box release later in the month.

Line 769 is the beginning of the check_is_protected( function and I think it should be line 775 that has the if statement that needs to be changed.

The fix you listed is not the correct way of addressing the problem. The problem lies in the group widget code.

I’ve just added a fix into BuddyPress:
