Has the group found a preferred WP Mega Menu PlugIn.., e.g. Max Mega Menu, WP Mega Menu, WP Mega Menu Pro, Menu Management Enhancer, etc.?

On the OpenLab Showcase, MMA215-1300 and ECE110 Lecture incorporate dropdown menus at the subsite levels and all appears to function very well on both desktop and mobile applications.  Would like to emulate that functionality for example, and wondering which Menu PlugIns were used on those?

    Thank you.

    Hi Greg,

I’m not familiar with any of these plugins myself. I’d suggest installing some and activating them on a subsite to test them out.

As far as the example sites, they sound like course sites on an installation that I’m not part of maintaining, so I couldn’t give you specifics. But aside from testing out some plugins, you might just want to test a few different themes. If you just want the ability to use regular (not “mega”) dropdown menus on a site, you could do that with any theme. Again, I’d suggest trying out a few to see what works for you.

    I hope this helps!

    Best,

    Bree

    Hi Bree,

Not entirely clear – sorry.  Understand the suggestion on installing some plugins and activating them on subsites to try them out.  Thanks much for that and pending a response to the below paragraph, will proceed accordingly – greatly appreciated!

But testing a few themes?  Thought with CBOX OpenLab our theme was locked.  I am indeed trying to simply organize some regular dropdown menus but currently find that unachievable and thought going to the mega menus would help.  Currently my menu items are not good – they get hidden behind the black header bar, they drop off when changing the site screen-size, often times they don’t even show on mobile devices, and instead of dropdowns (on the desktop), I get child pages offset and two rows below the parent page – ugh!  Thought again, bringing in mega plugins would help resolve these issues.

Any thoughts, suggestions, recommendations you might have are greatly appreciated.

    Thank you again.

    Greg.

    Hi Greg,

You are locked into using a theme on the main site where you must use the OpenLab Theme.

However, on each subsite, you can use whatever themes you would like.

To do this, you have to install the themes and activate them from the network menu. For new admins this can be a little tricky, because OpenLab disables the link to the network admin.

To get there go to yoursiteurl.com/wp-admin/network where you replace yoursiteurl.com with your main site. From there, go to the theme menu and install as many themes as you like. Child sites can use any theme that is installed and enabled. I have these themes installed and enabled:

    • AeonBlog
    • Ariel
    • Astra
    • Fluida
    • Gutenix
    • IKnow
    • Liquido
    • Lyrical
    • Miniva
    • NanoSpace
    • Neve
    • NewsPortal
    • NewsPortal Mag
    • OceanWP
    • OpenLab
    • Period
    • Primer
    • Storefront
    • Twenty Nineteen
    • Twenty Seventeen
    • Twenty Twenty
    • Zeko Lite

I think most of those themes would do menus the way you want them with dropdowns.

Thanks so much for chiming in, Ed!

I’d just add that the OpenLab theme probably doesn’t work well for sub-sites, since it’s made for the main site to display site-wide group and member activity, so I’d advise using a different theme or themes for those sites.

Why is the network administration link disabled for super admins anyway?

I mean, I know I just have to add /network when I am on the menu, but it is a little weird at first. The only reason I knew where to go is I have managed Multisites before.

Thank you both Bree and Ed.  Did not know could use different themes at subsites, so am curious how that’ll work and will definitely give it a try.., for now though, will proceed with OpenLab subsites.  Have a different question about emails and invitations so will open another thread on that.  Thank you again!!

    Hi Ed,

That’s a good question — thanks for raising it!
I’m afraid I don’t have an elegant justification for the disabled network admin link. It’s the current functionality on the City Tech OpenLab, which got migrated to CBOX OpenLab. It’s always been part of our workflow so I guess we stopped noticing it, but I agree that especially for new WP admins it would be helpful have the link.
I can flag this as a question for the team, and it may be something we can look at for a future release.
    Thanks!
    Bree
