I just logged in to a course home page – and the Doc is gone – when I look at activity for the page – it only shows my last edit – and no listing for deletion. Any ideas on what happened and/or how to restore the Doc?

See screenshot below – for last activity on this Doc

    Hi Sally,

I’ve just learned that a few of my responses to questions on this forum were never actually posted and unfortunately this was one of them! I did respond the day you posted, since I wanted to try to sort this out for the course you’re currently teaching!

Have you had any luck recovering the docs? If not, I’m happy to help if it’s not too late.

And again, I’m so sorry this fell through the cracks!

    Best,
    Bree

<p style=”text-align: left;”>Thanks for following up — well, no I never figured out what happened. We were restarting that Doc, but Hurricane Dorian delayed our project and so we are don’t at the moment need it. But, I was curious why it wasn’t reported on the activity log. And then, also I would want to be sure students cannot delete Docs but only edit them in the future. I haven’t yet had a chance to figure that out yet – so any tips are appreciated.</p>

    Hi Sally,

Students should not be able to delete docs — I’m not able to see any scenario in which they can. To be sure though, one thing you might find helpful is to create a “test student” account. You can join the course with this account and double check the permissions for docs. You can also use the account for testing things like this in the future — differences between an admin and non-admin account or faculty and student, etc.

Regarding the deletion issue, I have a few questions for you:

    1. Did you or another admin delete a different doc in the same course?

When I was troubleshooting this issue when you first reported it, I wasn’t able to reproduce it. But, I think that I may have just found an issue with trying to delete a doc but having a different doc deleted.

    2. When you go to the Dashboard of your main site > Docs > Trash, do you see the missing doc in the trash? If so, you can hover over the title of the doc and click Restore. Once you’ve restored it, it should appear in draft form in Dashboard > Docs (the sort order is alphabetical, so if you don’t see it, keep scrolling, or sort by date.). Click on the Doc title to edit, and then publish it. It should then reappear on the Docs page in your course.

Regarding the deletion not appearing in Activity, I don’t believe that doc deletions will show up there, so that seems OK. (Though I’d want to double check with the rest of the team to be sure.)

Let me know if any of this helps, or if you have any more questions.

    Thanks!
    Bree
