    Greetings,

We’ve been told that there’s no way to import a site to one of the four network templates. We are making detailed edits to a template on a separate site, and we will now have to copy all of our template settings into the real thing.

Is it possible to request this feature: A workspace where we can work on templates until they’re ready to publish? And/or a way to import a template we’ve designed, like using a WordPress site importer?

    Thanks!

    Hi Syelle,

You can use the WordPress importer to export the site you’re working on and import it into the template site. You will have to do a little cleaning up of any duplicated content, check the menu, etc. but that would my suggestion.
And thanks for the suggestion! I can put in a feature request, which we’d have to evaluate based on future funding availability. But I can see how this would be useful functionality.

Thanks so much for this reply, Bree! I misspoke: You are right, of course: sites can be imported into templates. The issue is that we are making templates with detailed activated plugins and widget settings, and those don’t carry over with the WP export/import tool.

If you are able to request a way for us to change which site is a template site, we would appreciate it! We’ve also thought that one way to get this functionality might be to combine setting the default templates with the new template chooser (that Boone is creating), so that all templates are managed in the same place. Just one idea!

Thanks, Syelle! Bree is taking a well-deserved break this week, but we will put our heads together on this when she gets back. 🙂

    Hi Syelle,

I just wanted to follow up here to say that we’ll look at incorporating this into the template chooser when we can begin work on it, but we’re still waiting to hear about funding.

    Thanks for the suggestion!
