I am new and I have some questions.

I am trying to decide between a multisite installation and a regular WordPress installation.

The site would be for a community organization fostering arts and learning.  We would have a Music group with sub groups… ie early music, contemporary, singing, dance etc.  I am wondering if it is better to give each group a separate site, or have all under one site?

    Thoughts?

Within a normal wordpress installation,  are all members able to see all members?  Is that the case with a multisite installation?

I also did not see any calendar function at all?

Also, what about an organize file depository?

I am sure I will have more questions. Looking forward to learning more.

    Thanks all!

Hi David – The multi-site decision largely depends on whether you want your members to be able to create their own blogs, or groups to be able to create group blogs.  It definitely adds a great layer.  In terms of your privacy question, there are many built in ways to configure groups and their visibility – and should you elect to go multi-site, many ways to configure the visibility for the blogs – from totally hidden to totally public.

The CBOX theme doesn’t have an events calendar, but members use a variety of plugins – some embed Google calendars, others use Buddypress Group Calendar – you might want to check out the WP plugin repository to see what’s out there.

In terms of file repositories – I think I’ve seen a lot of members use a plugin called BuddyDrive – check out this thread-

Hope this helps.  Maybe others will have more suggestions.

Thank you very much.  Have some things to look into.  I am at that point where most answers will likely give more questions:)
