    Hi,

I have been setting up my site and I have been toying around with Commons on a single use WordPress site but have been toying around with the idea of switching to a multiuser/network version of WordPress since I will have reporters all over the world reporting and I think the multiuser version of WordPress might make sense for me (still trying to figure that one out though!)  Here is my site: underground.net

But then I came across CUNY Academic Commons (or Commons) plugin which I thought Commons in a Box was.. but it looks like they’ve updated CUNY Academic Commons quite a bit in the past month and it has lots of plugins as part of it:  http://dev.commons.gc.cuny.edu/2013/12/21/commons-1-5-12/

Yet Commons in a Box hasn’t been updated in over a month.  Are they not the same thing?  Is there a reason why the two don’t update simultaneously?

Also, I am already running Buddypress 1.9 so I should not start using CBOX correct?

    Thanks so much!

Hi Charles – The CUNY Academic Commons has been around almost five years and has steadily evolved and matured.  It has a set release cycle for maintenance (new themes, plugins, upgrades) on the 11th and 21st of each month.  It serves as a model for Commons in a Box – and shows what is possible to do with a “Commons” site.  The principle behind Commons in a Box is to provide an easy way to manage a core set of plugins so that they are compatible with each other and don’t break when one of the plugins releases a new version.  For example, BuddyPress 1.9 was recently released, but Commons in a Box is still using BuddyPress 1.8 because some things in 1.9 will “break” the default theme.  When the dev team has made the corresponding changes, we will release a new version that takes advantage of BuddyPress 1.9.

Hope this makes sense.  Thanks and good luck with your new site!

CBOX has its roots in the CUNY Academic Commons, which in turn was made possible through funding from The City University of New York itself.
