Assuming one wants a simple site for only a few users and therefore does not want to include Forums within Groups, is there a way to “post” into a Group either as is done in a Forum or even better as is done in a Blog.  For a WordPress savvy user, they could go to the Activity Stream and post a “What’s New” and they then have to select a Group.  This is not so self-evident for new users, there does not seem to be this facility from within a Group and the user cannot embedded photos as can be done in a Blog nor include any files as can be done in a Forum (with the appropriate plugin) .  I have not been at this for too long but without including Forums in Groups, there does not appear to any way within the Group itself of communicating with other members (except maybe using Comments).  You have to go out to the Activity stream and post or into your own profile to send a message. Or am I missing something really obvious to everyone else?

Basically, I want multisite Blogs with all the social stuff of groups for each Blog.  But because of all the social stuff, I don’t want to call it a Blog because it behaves like a Group.  I can see this working really well in an extended family site.  With groups being used by smaller family units to tell stories or update each other on family events.  Similarly it would work well for teams and clubs.

Try deactivating the “Group Announcements” plugin under “Commons In A Box > Plugins” in the WP admin area.

This should allow any group member to post in the group activity stream.

Sounds like the Groupblog plugin might be what you’re looking for?
