Definitely a newbie question, but one I’ve spent 2 hours on and hoping someone can save me from myself!

I am primarily interested in forums for my site.  So, I am using the latest and greatest build + out of the box setup.  I have Groups running and a few forum items built up.  Unfortunately I cannot seem to identify where I can modify the left menu bar under Groups.  I would like to modify it to really simply add the “forums” sub-item so users can dive right in.  I took a screenshot of CBOX site and mine (to the right) showing what I am speaking about.

Would love any direction and if it is in the manual, where?  So I can learn to fish!

Much appreciated.  Really a sharp looking build.  Hoping to get my community up and running soon!

Hi Jimmy – can you go to the admin page for the group, and click on “Forums” and make sure that the button is checked that says “Yes. I want this group to have a Forum.”  Just guessing that that might be the issue.  It’s under “Enable Group Forum.”

    AWESOME!!

Thank you sir!  There are so many places to make customizations I got completely turned around.  You fixed it perfectly and showed me a new area to make enhancements.  Much appreciated!

    Best,

I’m posting here as this was the closest subject I found for my question, though I see the thread is over a year old!

So like Jimmy I’m a noob, and like Jimmy, I want to add a menu to the Groups left-side menu. But How do I add a menu item that isn’t as “out-of-the-box” as a Forum? I want to add menu links to exteral sites that will constitute additional resources the groups will use on a regular basis. An example will be a link to a specific editable Prezi or google doc.

Where and how would I add this so that appears in that side menu?

To make things more complicated, it may need to be that the link will be different for EVERY group, though at least at first I will be able to manage this from the back end, but am wondering if I can manipulate individual group menu links as well? This part isnt a dealbreaker, but would be awesome if I could make that work as well.

Thanks for any and all help!

    Hi Damon @whereisnomad –

You might want to take a look at this plugin – http://wordpress.org/plugins/buddypress-groups-extras/

It lets you add an item to the groups menu and customize its page content by group.  I just tried it and it seems to work pretty well.  Hope this helps.

    Hi Damon,

This is not a perfect solution, but one thing you might do is add important
links to the group description so that they always show up on the homepage
of the group. This won’t accomplish what you are asking for, but it is one
    simple workaround.

    Best,

    Matt
