We’re shopping for external server hosting for an upcoming CBOX project at LaGuardia CC. Here are some of the characteristics we’re looking for in a host:
*wordpress savviness to ensure troubleshooting wp updates, etc.
*flexible bandwidth plan- i.e., pay by amount of traffic
*good support (via a service contract, I’m guessing)
Thanks in advance for any advice on (1) actual hosting services or (2) suggestions about other things we should be looking for while we research them.
Just FYI, the CBOX team considered including specific hosting recommendations in our documentation but decided that we didn’t want to do so in the official documentation. I invite members of the CBOX community to respond to this question, though, with suggestions of hosts and hosting plans that have worked well. Thanks!
I’m testing CBOX on http://wpengine.com/ So far so good.
I’d like some environment recommendations for a multi-site install. Everywhere I tried it, it runs really slow.
Our Multisite community (http://community.presscrew.com) is currently hosted on WPENgine. We are extremely happy with it. It’s really fast, meant for large scale WP hosting and just works. Price tag is $99 a month, but I think it’s worth the price.
Thanks for your suggestions. We’re researching a few options and wpengine is among them, so it’s great to hear from folks who actually use it!
It’s hard to believe, but I’ve had great luck with multi-site buddypress and forum installs on The Temple Host‘s $15/mo Business Plan. It’s shared hosting, but because they have memory cache enabled on their servers, as long as you install and activate W3 Total Cache you get the speed you need. If you outgrow their premium shared hosting plan, the upgrade to their VPS plan is easy and it’s still cheaper than WP Engine.
Don’t get me wrong, I love WP Engine. I’m also a WP Engine customer, and do refer some clients there, but if you know how to use an ftp client, The Temple Host is the best bang for your buck that I’ve found (unless you want a WP Engine-specific feature like deploy with git).
