Hey there, is anyone else having an issue with notification emails not sending from new topics added to forums?

    I am running:

    – WordPress 3.5

    – Commons in a Box 1.0 (hurray! congratulations!)

    – CBOX Theme

    – Hosted on a shared Dreamhost server

    – Have the CBOX Forums Plugin activated and bbPress Forums disabled

    – Also have the BP Reply by Email plugin installed, and that is working fine with mentions (which are generating emails)

Thanks so much for everyone’s work!  What a great project…

    Hi Alan –

I initially had the same problem you describe, but now it is working for me. I noticed that a couple settings didn’t always stick for me when I created a group – email notifications and group forums.  I clickedon All Email (the default is no email) and I confirmed that I wanted to create a forum – but for some reason those settings didn’t persist.  I went back to the settings (clicking on “Admin” in the Group) and reset them.  And then they persisted.  Another thing I noticed in testing – not really an issue, but I wonder if this is what you are experiencing – is that there is a Yes/No setting in email notifications that asks if you want to be notified of your own forum posts.  If this is set to No – you won’t receive emails.  I think those setting can be found on your profile page.  So you might just need to set this to “Yes” when you are testing.

Thanks very much Scott for the help.  I’m glad to hear you had the same problem and eventually got it working.

Great idea to change the settings on receiving my own posts.  Unfortunately that didn’t seem to make any difference.  To be sure, I created a second account and joined a group just to test and see if that was the issue.

Screenshots of the settings for my user and for the group attached.

Any other ideas for settings to check??

    Thanks so much!

    Alan

    Hi Alan,

Can you clarify what you mean by this?

Have the CBOX Forums Plugin activated and bbPress Forums disabled

Hey Ray, thanks for your help!  We haven’t been able to solve this so far, even with a complete re-install from scratch (As an aside, we also created a group to test this on the Commons in a Box demo site and had the same issue there… this help and support forum is the only place I’ve been able to see email notifications of forum activity work), so I appreciate your help.

As for the forum settings, I’m attaching screenshots.  What I mean is that- as per the CBOX installation instructions- the BuddyPress Forums component is deactivated and the CBOX Plugin bbPress Forums is activated.

    Hi Alan,

Your forum setup looks correct. I’ve just emailed you so I can try and debug this issue faster.

Hope we’ll get to the bottom of the problem!

    Hi Alan,

I’ve narrowed this down to an issue with bbPress and how it interacts with WordPress’ site privacy setting.

You had your site set to disallow search engines from indexing your site. (View the “Reading Settings” page from the WP admin dashboard for this setting.)

bbPress also uses this option to determine if the forum item can be recorded into the BuddyPress activity stream. Since you disallowed search engines from indexing on your site, no forum-related activity was ever recorded. And since the Group Email Subscription plugin relies on forum posts to be recorded into the BuddyPress activity stream, no subscription emails could ever be sent.

In the meantime, if you allow search engines to index your site, you’ll be able to get group emails for forum content working again.

I think this is a bbPress bug; I’ve just filed a ticket about this.
