I know I’ve mentioned on here that we attempted to make updates to our site (CBOX, WP, and associated plugins – BuddyPress/Mailgun) and it crashed our site. Were we supposed to execute the updates in any particular order? Do you have to update WP after you update CBOX or vice versa? Does doing the CBOX update take care of all the other updates by default (i.e. – if I update CBOX, it will update all the BuddyPress plugins etc.)? Any insight would be helpful!

Also, we’re still looking for someone to work with us as a part-time/contract web admin – please let me know if you have anyone you could direct me to!

    Thank you!

Hi Joanna – CBOX handles updates for all the plugins we package (https://commonsinabox.org/documentation/plugins), and we ensure every plugin is cooperating, but we can’t guarantee “independent” upgrades.  Sites are free to upgrade to new plugin versions, but it might be a better strategy to wait until we make sure everything is working well together.  That is the concept of CBOX – we handle compatibility.  We do not automatically upgrade your site to newest WP version –  you’ll need to do that.  But through the forum you should be able to check out when it is safe to upgrade to a new version of WP. (Sometimes it takes us a couple days to catch up.)  Other than that, I would recommend using CBOX to upgrade our plugins.  We’ve had some issues when members upgrade to newer versions of software that hasn’t been tested with our suite of plugins.

Plugins that are not included in our suite may pose issues too, so it is always good to test.

    Hope this helps!

Thanks @ScottVoth! This is super helpful.

    Another couple clarifying questions:

    1. In terms of the order of the updates to CBOX and WordPress, would you do the CBOX update first, then the WP update? Or vice versa? Or does it matter?
    2. I see that WordPress 4.7.3 is now available; per your comment above – how will I know when you guys have caught up (i.e. – “Sometimes it takes us a couple of days to catch up.”)

You guys are wonderful btw – thanks for the responsiveness (and patience).

Hey guys! Just checking in  – we’ve got our Dev site back up and wanted to test out the newest CBOX update, but I noticed WordPress just rolled out a new security update (4.7.3) – has CBOX caught up with that, or should I wait?

    Hi Joanna,

You should go ahead and update to the latest WP security update.
