i dont see a reason why any arbitrary html tag cant be used?
what worked for me is i used the plugin get_the_image — it grabs the first image associated with a post I then added that to that theme
I was actually referring to images found from post BY the activity – i sorta just fanagled it by changing it from 100×100 to 200×200
