How do I add items to the “Categories” drop down on the Main Home Page.  I’ve created several categories under the Network “Posts” and also under the OpenLab “Group Categories” but as of yet, am unable to get any of them to appear on the Home Page “Categories” widget.  All that ever appears is “Uncategorized.”

Attached PDF to assist / clarify question.

    Thank you very much.

    Hi Greg,

By default, WordPress does not list categories with no posts attached to them.

Once you have written a post and have attached one of your missing categories, the category will show up in the dropdown list.

You can force WordPress to show empty categories, but you’ll have to use a code snippet like this one: https://www.isitwp.com/force-categories-widget-to-display-empty-categories/

    Hope that helps.

Thank you very much Ray.  I would like to pursue this option.  Hoping it does not create other issues.

My programming skill set is very light.  Best I can do is follow copy and paste directions.  Can you please tell me where to insert that snippet?  I can send you pics of my File Manager and GoDaddy C-Panel structure if that’ll assist.

    Thanks again.

    Create a file at /wp-content/plugins/bp-custom.php.

    Follow these instructions:
    https://codex.buddypress.org/themes/bp-custom-php/

Then copy the code snippet from the previous link I mentioned for showing empty categories.

Your completed file should look like this: https://pastebin.com/W1AE4FAF

Outstanding – thank you Ray!  Will give that a try and let you know how it works out.  Thank you again!

    Ray,

Just a courtesy update – studied related material including what you’d provided.  Holding off on that update at this time.

Now able to show additional ‘Categories’ via drop-down on home page (by creating posts associated with those categories); Clicking on those drop-down categories however, does not take you to any associated posts.  Rather, just to bottom of home screen without showing any of posts at all.  Need to figure this out first then will return to showing all ‘Categories’ including those without any associated posts.

Again, just a courtesy update and another note of thanks for your help – much appreciated.

    Greg.

    Hi Greg,

I can confirm your report about the empty category pages. I’ve created an issue here: https://github.com/cuny-academic-commons/commons-in-a-box/issues/314.

I’ll update this topic when we’ve addressed this. Don’t have an ETA at the moment though.
