This is a fantastic development with Buddy Press.

My existing site has up to date BP, bbPRess, WP 3.5 & a BP compatible theme. I have set up the groups I want and some menus & so it would be nice if I could just instal Commons in a Box and gain the extra functionality etc. Users have just started registering but not much activity as it is officially in testing mode.

Can I just instal Commons in a Box and let it worry about which plugins to add etc? Maybe disable any BP plug ins I have that are not in the CBOX list?

The alternative is a fresh installation of my site but redo the Groups, Menus, Users who have registered etc

    Thanks for your suggestions.

OK – soI should first read the documentation which says under FAQ:
I already have a BuddyPress site running. Can I still install CBOX?

Yes.  Commons In A Box will determine your specific settings and install and manage the CBOX suite of plugins.  You can retain your theme, or migrate to our default theme.  Your choice.”

I’ll do that and come back if a problem ..

So the installation of the Commons in a Box on the existing Buddy Press site worked fine.

What didn’t work was the attempt to migrate the existing group forums to bbPress forums. I suspect this was because I was already using bbPress as well as Group Forums and had changed the name of the partent forum in bbPress. In any event the migration didn’t work.

I was using group forums for forums private to group members and had also set up some bbPress forums as document librares as document upload to BuddyPress was [and still is?] somewhat problematic. Using bbPress for forums may solve the problem?

Anyway my new strategy is to install Commons in a Box on a fresh version of my site [without the existing Buddy Press installation – ie there is some contents, blog, pages etc to which the forums will be added] . I just need to get BuddyPress 1.7 Beta installed as recommended by JJ Jacoby on the Buddy Press Blog on 15 February. I have a new question about how to do that on top of the Commons in  a Box installation. Will post this question in a new thread.
