    Hi all!

I’m setting up a new CBOX installation for UCSD (exciting!). I’m coming across a few issues that I haven’t encountered before — perhaps because I’ve missed an important set up step.

    1. I’m not able to create groups. I get an error message (“The requested URL /groups/create/ was not found on this server”) when I click on “Add new” from within the admin panel.
    2. Profiles are not showing up. After creating a profile (which appears saved in the system) I get an error message when I try to view it (“The requested URL /members/erglass/ was not found on this server.”)

Any idea about what step (or permissions) I might be missing? Many thanks!

    Hi Erin –

Can you check out Settings>>BuddyPress and see if all those options seem correct?  Have you tried to refresh your permalinks – i.e. just go to that page and hit save (ensure you are not using default permalink structure).  I am copying Christian @haystack to see if he has any other suggestions.

    Hi @eglass

I think Scott covered the most important things to check. Does your site work with pretty permalinks elsewhere? If you create a page (called say “hello”) can you see it at ‘http://yoursite/hello/’ or does it default to something like ‘http://yoursite/?p=22’ instead? If it’s the latter, then for some reason WordPress has been unable to create a .htaccess file, so you’ll need to manually create one in the same directory as wp-config.php. Here’s the page on the codex if that’s the case.

    Cheers, Christian

Thanks all for your help! I am able to create permalinks but it strangely inserted “index.php” within the URL. I created a page called “test” and the URL is now “http://knit.ucsd.edu/index.php/test/”.

Additionally, I see an error message in the BuddyPress settings. While it doesn’t seem directly related to the issue at hand, perhaps it points to the underlying problem?

    Error message:

Your BuddyPress Docs attachments directory is publicly accessible. Doc attachments will not be properly protected from direct viewing, even if the parent Docs are non-public.

It looks like you are running Apache. The most likely cause of your problem is that the AllowOverride directive has been disabled, either globally (httpd.conf) or in a VirtualHost definition. Contact your host for assistance.

Are either of those details possible leads? Thanks again!

Hi Erin – Can you check on your Settings>> General page and find the “WordPress URL” and the “Site URL” and see if they might have the “index.php” appended?  I am pinging @haystack if he can think of another cause.  The second issue may be with your .htaccess file – I don’t know if you have permissions to edit or not – @haystack – do you think Erin should contact her host admin for this?  You are best at giving directions 🙂
