Well, my first stab at getting university funding to set up CBOX for our campus community was turned down in part because the committee considering my request is of the opinion that this would replicate what we can do with Microsoft SharePoint, which we already have set up on campus. It’s a reasonable concern, of course, about not paying for new tools that replicate what we can do with tools we’ve already paid for, but I had hoped we would be able to move in the direction of free and open-source applications like CBOX.

I have my doubts about trying to adapt SharePoint for this purpose, but I don’t really know that much about it. I’ve just started to look at sites like to learn more.

I’m going to keep trying to make this happen with CBOX, but I’m wondering if there are any users here with enough knowledge about SharePoint to offer an opinion. Can it be used to create an academic commons in the way that CBOX works? Is it worth trying to find out?

CBOX has its roots in the CUNY Academic Commons, which in turn was made possible through funding from The City University of New York itself.

The CUNY Graduate Center has directly contributed to the CUNY Academic Commons, housing the project since its inception, and has contributed to CBOX through its GC Digital Initiatives.
