By a combination of sheer fluke and help from Ray I have almost cobbled together something that resembles the website I want. However I really need help with two things before I press so many buttons that I completely mess it up.1. I was using mingle forum which looked great but had no functionality in that it was impossible to post replies (again probably my fault). Now I have gone back to the bp default forum and it works but looks terrible (I want to achieve group private forums and general open forums with various categories and sub-topics).2. I want to list my users separately as students, groups, lecturers, universities and companies. I thought I could use Buddypress user account type – lite but I have had no success.If anyone could take a look at my site to see where I am going wrong or provide me with the idiots guide to forums and multi-user types I would really appreciate it. I am on studentsurveyor.com. Thanks you.

Hi Giles, I’m definitely no expert, in fact I’m barely competent but through a method of trial and error here is what I eventually did:

For user type I just used the Buddypress user account type (BUAT) free plugin. You can get more options with the paid version but for now I have stuck with the lite version.

For the forum, I never managed to get mingle to work, although it is much pretty, somehow or other I managed to configure a forum that nobody could post in! So for bbpress forum this is what I did:

Go to Forums > new forum
Choose whether you are creating a forum or a category. This is where bbpress is confusing.

Category is actually your forum title and
forum is actually your topic.

Categories are only used to organise your topics. Forums can only contain sub-topics to your category but can also be the parent or child of other forum topics.

So for example:                 category = forum = holiday destinations;

forum = topics = Europe (parent) or Italy (child).

I found it easier to do all the categories first then go back and add the forums

3. Give your category or forum a title

4. On the right hand side: Choose whether it is public, hidden or private; choose hierarchical structure (e.g whether it is a child of a category; choose order you would like it to appear in;

5. Adjust the default slug if you want to e.g the name that appears after your domain.com/

6. Press publish

To make it look prettier I put insert your own title here in header title because I couldn’t work out to access bold button in the title text. I’m sure that isn’t right (maybe someone could enlighten us) but it does work!

Hope this works for you! My site is StudentSurveyor.com if you want to take a look.
