We are looking at making significant changes away from the standard cbox theme and would rather not build a child theme on cbox and the Infinity framework. Does anyone know of other non-Infinity themes that have been built for commons in a box. I’d love to be able to at least get in touch with those theme authors.

    Thanks!

    Hi Robert,

At its most basic, the CBOX Theme is a WordPress theme with some built-in BuddyPress support and an advanced configuration panel.

You should look to use any WordPress theme since universal theme compatibility was added to BuddyPress quite a few releases ago. You might have to adjust some of the CSS to match your chosen theme though.

However, BuddyPress also comes with additional styling for the WordPress default Twenty_ themes — Twenty Twelve up to Twenty Seventeen. Test these themes and if you think you can build a foundation from one of them, you can build a child theme to make further customizations.

You can also look at some of the BuddyPress premium themes on the market such as BuddyBoss and Kleo. Keep in mind that we do not particularly endorse any one of them; questions and support should be made at those respective forums.

Lastly, I should mention that the next major version of CBOX will come with a new package geared towards teaching and collaboration. This new package will be called CBOX-OL (OL stands for OpenLab) and will be bundled with a brand-new theme. Look out for this in Q3 2018.

    Hope that helps.

    Hi Ray,

Thanks, that’s very helpful. I’ll be interested to see the new functionality in CBOX-OL. Is there a place where I could learn more about what you have planned?

At this point we’re looking at starting with something like underscores or FoundationPress and adding in the appropriate templating for BuddyPress and bbPress – a different game from child themes off of a Twenty_ theme or BuddyBoss/Kleo. We will release what we do as an open source theme for CBOX.

Can you say any more about the brand-new theme that will be coming? Perhaps we can cross pollinate.

Thanks for all the great work you all have been and are doing on CBOX.

    Hi Ray,

I see that you have the CBOX-OL version up to 1.10-beta1. Looks like great progress! Is there anywhere I could read more about the new functionality that CBOX-OL will add?

    Thanks!

Thanks for your interest, Robert. We’re close to announcing something official with appropriate documentation, so stay tuned.
