I’d like a site that allows hybrid group features (sp. public viewing, but private joining) and can set a group size limit on how many can join.

Any suggestions?

I’m not aware of any current way to automatically restrict the group size.  Maybe someone else knows?

Groups can be public, private (i.e. a non-member can see that they exist and who the admins are, and can request membership, but the group content is not viewable by non-members), or hidden.  For a hidden group, a non-member would not even know the group exists.

If you want a private group – would it work for you to have a public group blog where members can showcase their work?  (This is presuming you are running multisite.) (https://commonsinabox.org/documentation/plugins/buddypress-groupblog)

Your question is a good one.  Maybe others have some more suggestions…
