July 12, 2013 at 11:09 pm #3142Matthew K GoldModeratorI do want to say that I see the development of a plugin that would do this sort of thing to be a good possible feature for our roadmap — I can imagine that it would facilitate usage among many communities if there were an easy way to bring a listserv over to a CBOX group.
July 12, 2013 at 11:07 pm #3141Matthew K GoldModeratorIn general, I’d agree with Ray, but I’d say that our preference is that issues be raised here first for discussion and testing and then moved over to Github as necessary for implementation; in general, in this space, we’re trying to foster community around the project and ideally to have users of CBOX sharing work with each other. We try hard to be responsive in these forums, and I think it’s valuable for users of the system to see what others are doing (and what problems they’re running into).

We’ve had good luck with a plugin called “Rotating Tweets.” You can see it
in action here, under the slider – http://gcdi.commons.gc.cuny.edu/Best,

July 11, 2013 at 11:21 am #3124Matthew K GoldModeratorHi Helene,
Thanks so much for your comments and suggestions for the CBOX platform. We’re currently in the process of working on a medium/long-term roadmap for Commons In A Box, and feedback from members of this forum is a valuable part of that process. We always appreciate suggestions and bug reports from users of the platform, but we can’t guarantee that all requests will be accomodated in the roadmap, due to decisions we may have to make given our limited resources and our consideration of the larger community of CBOX users.
However, the platform is designed to be customizable and extensible, so that users can customize their CBOX installations/themes and develop their own tools that can be integrated into the environment. If there are very specific things you’d like to see in your installation, it might make sense for you to work with a developer to add them, and it would be absolutely wonderful if you could then contribute that work back to the project by submitting patches at http://github.com/cuny-academic-commons/cbox-theme I’m very excited about the fact that we’re starting to see users of CBOX beginning to contribute patches to the project.
Employing a developer or working with someone invested in your project who is willing to learn coding/markup/styling along the way (there is a great tradition of that in the WordPress community!) is the best way to get your CBOX installation to look and function exactly how you’d like. If that’s not an option for you, we’ll just have to ask you to be patient as we work through various issues and prioritize them according to our own workflow and our vision of the larger free software project.
Again, many thanks for your use of the platform and your continuing comments and suggestions.
Best,
Matt

July 4, 2013 at 4:10 pm #3088Matthew K GoldModerator“If you try to access one of the other pages you see some of the information from those portions of the site.”
Thanks. A few more questions:
1. Are you using the CBOX default theme?
2. Can you be more specific about the “other pages” to which you’re referring?
3. When you say “some of the information,” does that mean “some, but not all”? Can you describe more specifically what you can and can’t see? Thanks.

I haven’t experimented with it. Perhaps give it a try and report back.
Considering that you are looking to do a lot of custom work to your CBOX
install, you might consider setting up a development site so that you can
experiment with new plugins to test out their compatibility before
implementing on your production website.Best,

July 4, 2013 at 9:19 am #3083Matthew K GoldModeratorHi Helene. Are you talking about nested forum replies, so that comments to one forum reply can be associated with each other rather than with the whole forum post? I’m not sure about CBOX compatibility, but you might test this plugin – http://wordpress.org/plugins/bbpress-threaded-replies/
Generally, forum capabilities are related to BbPress, so you should check the BbPress plugin repo when you’re looking to alter forum functionality.

at those pages as a non-logged-in user?Best,

July 2, 2013 at 9:55 am #3056Matthew K GoldModeratorWe currently have no plans to do this, but we can think about it for the future. In particular, we are working towards some grant applications that would include this kind of outreach and public training, though grants tend to take a while to come to fruition.
In the near term, it would be interesting to know how widespread the desire is for training sessions like these.

Try searching for “comment excerpt” — some of the results there might give
you what you need. Also try searching the BbPress plugin repo for forum related plugins –
