I asked around and found a solution to the gray overlay problem.  I used the “Add Admin CSS” plugin and added some CSS to the “Admin CSS” window within the plugin:

.ui-widget-overlay.ui-front {
display: none !important;
}

Thank you for the helpful link.  I did go read it, and then I clicked on the “Script” tab within Firebug, but I didn’t see anything labeled as an error (no red-circle “X” or the word, “error”).
